This is a cabinet card from Al. It fits perfectly with the theme this week of “groups.”

This is what Al wrote about the photo:

The photographer, William Henry Terry, was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire ca 1833, moved to Blackpool in 1870 and was there until approximately 1903. The 1901 census records him at 14 Crystal Road, Blackpool, he is listed in a directory for Blackpool as being on Church Street in 1902 (the address on the photo) but there is no directory for 1903 and he is not listed in the 1904 directory. He appears in another city (Huddersfield, Yorkshire) in the 1911 census so it appears he moved from Blackpool ca 1903. I think we can safely date the photo to ca 1900 - 1902 considering the apparent ages of the sitters. My grandmother and grandfather were both born in 1884 so this would make them 18 yrs old in 1902 - looks about right.

The only people I can identify for certain, based on the names on the back are: Mary Alice Hall (my grandmother, back row, right); Richard Williamson (my grandfather, front row, right); Martha Smith (back row, left); Harry Williamson (front row, left); Jack Smith (back row, second from left). I don't know which of the remaining young ladies is Mary Ann (per names on back), and that still leaves two ladies/girls unidentified. 

My grandfather was a mechanic in a manufacturing plant in Leigh, Lancashire, and my grandmother worked in a cotton mill. They are dressed in their finery for a day trip to the seaside.

Al calls this photo Happy Days at Blackpool.  Just think, these were more than likely all teenagers..what a stark difference between the teenagers today.

This week we will look at some group photos.  The first one is from blog reader Al, he has shared with us before.   Al is a deltiologist..he collects postcards. 

This photo was taken in Brantford, Ontario, Canada in 1928.  In this case two of the young ladies are Al’s Aunts.. Maude and Rose.  Someone (not Al) marked the girls names right on the photo, in this case it is probably a good thing..there can be no mix ups.

Maude Thompson age 17, Laura Coleman age 16, Irene Bland age 17, Rose Thompson age 18, Hazel Baer age 16, Gladys Bland age 19.

I love the photo, it depicts a time when young gals wore their hair in finger waves and their skirts at knee length and anklets with their shoes. An all girl band!  Can you imagine living on the same block as these gals..what wonderful music they must have played.

This is a Cabinet Card from the Antique Mall in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

It is very worn,  it may have been a much loved photo.  The back is a medium brown color and as you can see the front is black.  During the years 1880 to 1890 different colors were often used for the face and the back of mounts, however the simple skirts and blouses tend to make me think that this was taken right around 1900. 

I bought this photo, because I believe that it is a four generation photo.  It has some wear and I have restored it somewhat..it has some deep scratches.  Most of the time I just let the photos go thru without any restoration, when the scratches detract from the photo because they have gone over the face..I like to repair them.

There are no identifying marks on the photo, no photographers imprint and no names.

This is a Cabinet Card that I purchased in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota at the Antique Mall.

Maudy Muigus ?  ( Mandy Mingus) ..I wonder what your life was like.

I will guess that this photo was taken sometime after 1891. Roshon was the photographer, his main Gallery was in Lebanon, PA  He must have been quite successful to have three galleries.  Iggy can probably tell us how close these three towns are.

This is one of the only cabinet cards that I have seen that says that the negative will be retained for ten years.

Photo Number 494

This is a photo from the Tin Ceiling in Park Rapids, Minnesota.  It is a tiny shop on Main Street.

This is a typical Art Deco inspired folder that was popular in the 1930’s into the 1940’s. I find this kind of photo frame and folder to be a work of art all by itself.  The photographer remains unknown..because his imprint is very light and unreadable.

This is one of those on the diagonal photos.  A very nice individual by the name of Brett left a comment for me one day.  He dated these diagonal photos to the years 1895 to 1905.

This photo is from the Antique Mall in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

I did a preliminary search for Laura Mosher and found so many that it discouraged me. If we only had some clue where she was from. I think she is a fairly young gal..16 or 17 and she has no jewelry on, perhaps the plaid was enough of a decoration..the sleeves of this blouse or dress are fairly full, stuffed with paper they would have been quite large sleeves.

Ida Norley has gone home.

Ida had a brother by the name of Emet, the photo went to Emets Granddaughter Karen. Iggy was instrumental in locating Karen..thanks Iggy!! Iggy contacted Karen and she shared this info:

What  pleasant surprise!!!!  Ida Norley was my Grandfather Emet Norley’s Sister, as you noted.  My Father was Arthur Norley.  I was born in Bagley in 1948 and have many relatives still living in Clearwater County.   I remember visiting Aunt Ida as a child when she lived in the Minerva area.  I think that her husband Albert Mattson had passed away as I do not remember him.  This is really a coincidence – just yesterday my Mother, who is now 86 years old, was talking about how “Aunt Ida” had raised Emet because their mother was not with the family.

She also included her address and I mailed off the photo!
