Photo Number Fifty-Four

I call this one "Family Gathering"   there are about thirty people in this photograph..this photo is very worn and faded.  I restored it to the best of my ability for now.   I love old Farmhouses like this one, the upstairs and the front porch..I will guess that this is a photo from around 1920. This house has some gingerbread trim on the porch.. a trim that I personally find very interesting.

Well thanks to Abra and her sleuthing around at an ancestry site when she can't sleep at night..we have our first success!!  Photo Number Fifty-One!!  Armed with the info that Abra gave me,   I did a search for the name she gave me and viola!  I found a newspaper article.. I just happened to have a phone book of that area.  The first person I called was the right guy.  I am sure he thought I was nuts..and sometimes I am a little nutty!  I spoke with his wife..they now have my phone number and we will meet with them sometime soon so that some of these photos can be with the people that will appreciate them the most..their families!  What a Christmas gift this is for me..my whacky idea actually worked. I hope that they will tell me more about Grace and Esther..if they do I will add the information to their photographs.

Photo Number Fifty-Three

I call this one "The Bow Tie Guy"  ..what do you think 1930's or 1940's??  Is the pattern of the suit coat what they used to call Herringbone? I haven't a clue. He looks very studious..do you suppose he was a teacher or an accountant?
On a side note, often times when Far Guy and I are out and about..if we are stuck waiting someplace..we watch people and discuss what we think they did for a living.  It makes for some interesting conversations!

Photo Number Fifty-Two

Early this morning when I read the comments from yesterday..I said "OH MY"  I have a connection.  This is a photo that I found in the box from the antique shop.  This is Mr and Mrs Voge  ..the first initial looks like a CJ could they be the Grandparents of Grace Photo Number Fifty one and Esther Photo Number Four?  There is a Bertha notation..could that be a name..or is it the name of the town they lived near..as there is a Bertha Minnesota.   Maybe Abra the sweetie that she is will find out.. doncha just love how this mystery is unfolding?  ( I have known and have had the pleasure of knowing Abra for almost two years now..she is a blogging friend)

Photo Number Fifty-One

This is a postcard..an AZO one from 1918 to 1930.  Someone has written "Grace" on the back.   She looks very much like the person Esther  that married Walter Davison in Photo Number Four.   Perhaps her middle name was Grace?  Or perhaps she had a sister named Grace..or perhaps this photo  post card went to a person named Grace.  Who knows..perhaps Abra will run the name again..and see if Esthers middle name was Grace!
The neckline on this dress was altered..it must have been too low cut..so an inset was added!

*** Update Sunday December 13, 2009  I have located and spoke with Grace's son and daughter in law..we will be getting together so that they can look through all of my photos..success at last ..some photos are finding their proper home!!

Photo Number Fifty

A busy day today..but I am finally here!  Carl Thiel was a former actor turned photographer in Duluth, Minnesota..down on the Ingalls Block. This is a cabinet card and this photo was taken sometime between 1887 and 1901.   I was intrigued with her  " nose spectacles"  this type of frame is called Pince-nez. ..the spectacles were on a chain that could be reeled into an eyeglass holder that was pinned to your dress.  I got held up when I was reading about early glasses..about how some people felt that glasses were something to be ashamed of and they felt out of whack ..and only wore glasses in private.   I have worn glasses all my life, I don't think I ever could see..even as a small child.  I rarely take my glass off..I wear them even at night..that way if I wake up and need to see something ..I can!

Photo Number Forty-Nine

This is Mamie..or at least that is what it says on the back of the photo.  This photo is on hard card stock and was trimmed by the photographer into this shape.
She is beautiful, I love her curls..it's seems they have her all fenced in with the furniture..perhaps it helped to steady her so she would not move too much.   I will just guess at a 1910 date for this one..

Photo Number Forty-Eight

This is a pair.

I purchased these in an Antique Shop.  They are strange..they are almost half photograph and half ink drawing.  I don't quite know how else to explain them.   Has anyone seen anything like these? (Click to enlarge)
